Botanical Name: Magnolia ‘Frank’s Masterpiece’

Comman Name: Frank’s Masterpiece Magnolia
Garden Origin

Notable Feature: A red, upright magnolia with excellent vigor. The striking blossoms that reach almost a foot across are a deep reddish purple on the outside while the inside is white with a hint of pink -- a stunning combination.

Habit: A fast-growing, upright tree with a strong central leader, reaching 30’ tall and 25’ wide. Growth form is gaunt when young, ultimately pyramidal and picturesque with long ascending upper branches, and semi-weeping lower branches. Hardy in Zones 5-9.

Foliage: Deciduous, dark green and glossy. The large, 'paddle-shaped' leaves hang vertically from the branches.

Flower: Large, often 10" in diameter, with 8 or 9 petal-like tepals that are a deep red-purple-pink on the outside and white with a pink blush on the inside. The early spring blossoms sit upright along the branchlets. Flowering is mid-season, so late frosts are seldom a problem, however the large flowers can be damaged by strong winds so a protected spot is best.

Interesting Fact: This masterpiece was named for its hybridizer Frank Gaylon of Knoxville, TN, in 1977. A cross between Magnolia ×soulangeana ‘Deep Purple Dream’ and Magnolia ‘Paul Cook’.
